FND Manchester at Atticus Psychotherapies
Specialist Psychological Support for Functional Neurological Disorder
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a condition that affects how the brain and nervous system function, rather than being caused by structural damage or disease. In FND, normal brain processes involved in movement, sensation, awareness, or consciousness become disrupted, leading to real, involuntary neurological symptoms. People with FND may experience symptoms such as non-epileptic or dissociative seizures, weakness or paralysis, tremor or movement difficulties, problems with walking or balance, sensory changes (including numbness or altered sensation), speech or swallowing difficulties, pain, fatigue, cognitive difficulties often described as “brain fog,” or episodes of dissociation or altered awareness. Although medical tests and brain scans may appear normal, these symptoms are genuine, distressing, and can be significantly disabling. Importantly, because the nervous system itself is intact, FND symptoms are potentially reversible with the right understanding, support, and treatment.
